GSU Physical Therapy Service Trip to Moultrie 2018

Our Project

Each year Georgia State University’s Department of Physical Therapy students travel to Moultrie, Georgia for the Farmworker Family Health Program. This year, 15 second-year graduate students will be making the week-long trip to South Georgia in June, where they will conduct screening exams of the children of migrant workers during the daytime and treat the migrant workers and family members when they finish their work each evening. Physical therapy students will collaborate with students of other health disciplines from several universities, including Emory and the University of Georgia. This is a unique opportunity for GSU DPT students to treat an under-served population, apply the clinical reasoning and skills learned in the classroom, and work with various other healthcare disciplines toward a common goal. 

Why Give?

We are seeking your help to raise funds to cover the cost for transportation and lodging associated with traveling to Moultrie. Our goal of $4,000 will help cover these costs to reduce the financial burden placed on the participating students. Additionally, your support will help provide supplies for farm workers and their families.

Farm workers sustain many injuries on the job as a result of harvesting produce and repetitive lifting, but many migrant workers lack access to basic medical screening and healthcare. Education on injury prevention and proper body mechanics can benefit many workers as a form of preventative care. Additionally, many of these workers lack the resources to help them in their healing process such as ice packs, ACE bandages, braces and other basic medical supplies to aid in their recovery and prevent re-injury. Some even lack basic necessities such as work boots and socks to protect them while working in the fields, and pillows for sleeping in their camps.

If we exceed our goal, additional funds raised will continue to assist with transportation costs, meals, and added supplies for the workers. Any funds remaining after our trip will support the program for next year. By making a gift, you will help enhance this educational experience for the Georgia State Physical Therapy students and make a lasting impact on the migrant workers who are participating in the Farmworker Family Health Program. 

About Us:  

Georgia State University is the home of the oldest accredited Physical Therapy program in the state of Georgia. Students gain a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree after three intensive years of graduate study. Georgia State Physical Therapy Students have traveled to Moultrie to participate in the Farmworker Family Health Program for the past 16 years. Each year, second-year students collaborate with students of other health disciplines from several universities. Through this program, these students gain practical knowledge about the field before they enter their final year of study and are also able to treat an under-served population.
