Send GSU Physical Therapy to Nicaragua

Our Project

The Georgia State Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is sending a group of thirteen passionate students on an intensive study abroad experience in Nicaragua. For one week, students will be immersed into the small farming village of Los Robles. Students will learn about the unique culture and lifestyle of this community while providing a variety of services to individuals in need. The students will provide physical therapy clinics for local coffee farmers, in which they will treat the musculoskeletal injuries common to a manual labor occupation. Students will address the specialized needs of adults and children with neurological conditions, in hopes of enhancing mobility within their homes and community. Students will also develop exercise programs for women and children, as well as aide in home projects such as building clay ovens and painting homes with mosquito repellant. This study abroad project will provide students with an incredible learning experience, while also helping serve the health and wellness needs of a greatly underserved population.

Why Give

The study abroad project will cost around $1,400 per student, which includes program fees, food, lodging, transportation, and airfare. Our goal of $13,000 is to offset these costs in order to reduce the financial burdens placed on the participating students. Excess donations will go toward student travel. Your support will not only benefit the students, but also the community needs of Los Robles. Please help GSU DPT students make a momentous impact in Nicaragua.

About Us

Georgia State University is the home of the oldest accredited Physical Therapy program in the state of Georgia. Students gain a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree after three intensive years of graduate study. This is the first international study abroad program offered to DPT students. This project is a great opportunity for GSU DPT students to work with an underserved population, apply the skills learned in the classroom, and develop a deeper understanding of global cultures.
