The Lewis College Occupational Therapy Department is raising funds to build a Technology Resource Lab. Funds will be used to purchase: 1) a range of assistive technologies (including adaptive communication switches, communication boards, mobile arm support, voice-activated assistants) required to increase student capacity to provide a range of assistive technology interventions; and 2) equipment (including usability testing software, wearable sensors, virtual and augmented reality hard/software) that will facilitate immersive, hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies to increase students’ capacity to provide technology-enabled assessments and interventions, and interdisciplinary research that demands fluency with a wide range of technology platforms.
Successful occupational therapy service provision depends on knowledge of many potential interventions to meet the unique needs of individuals. Therefore, for occupational therapy students, gaining fluency over a wide range of technologies is a crucial component of their training, particularly in OT 6220: Assistive Technology and Environmental Assessment and Intervention Across Life Span.
Since its inception, the Georgia State occupational therapy program has relied tremendously on our community partners to meet this goal. They continue to generously offer their time, resources, and dedication with our students to provide tours, field trips, demonstrations, and other experiential opportunities to facilitate hands-on interaction with various technologies.
While such opportunities give them an excellent basis, to facilitate continued practice and true mastery, we are in need of an in-house inventory of technologies, to which students will have full access at any point in their training. This expansion is particularly crucial at this point in the program’s growth -- as we balance the needs for personalized training with our increasing enrollment numbers.
Your gift today, no matter the size, will help us reach our goal!
With your gift to Occupational Therapy Assistive Technology Lab, the Georgia State University Foundation will fund the purchase of assistive technologies and equipment to provide hands-on experiential learning for students.. Any additional funds will be used to purchase additional equipment and supplies. If the project funds remain inactive for six (6) months, they will be transferred to the Occupational Therapy Excellence Fund.
