Geology Field Camp 2016

About Us:

Geology Field Camp is offered through the Department of Geosciences in the College of Arts & Sciences. The Geology Field School, recognized as one of the leading programs in the nation, is hosted every summer in Montana. We are proud that we provide our students with experiences that are intellectually, physically, and personally challenging - these are life-changing experiences, and the students emerge as true geologists on the other side.

Geology is a field-oriented science; even during pure laboratory studies, field relationships are necessary to completely understand the problem at hand. Our field camp provides a unique opportunity to make practical use of material from almost any sub-discipline of geology and teach the basic field skills necessary for any field study in earth/environmental sciences. Our field camp focuses on solving complex issues ranging from the origin of the North American continent to the most challenging issues of our day, such as climate change. Students emerge knowing that the state of knowledge in the different realms of the geological sciences vibrates and pulses like the Earth itself.  We believe that we are forming a generation of professionals and scientists who will help solve the problems of our times. Every geologist looks back on their field school experience as a major formative experience.

Our Project:

In June 2016, 26 students will spend six weeks participating in the Georgia State Geology Field School. Our field camp program consists of two courses taught in the majestic landscapes of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho for six weeks. Through the six-week, six-credit hour program, students complete a number of projects to learn and develop field and mapping skills.

The Field Camp courses prepare students for their academic and professional careers. To perform satisfactorily in the field requires a special set of skills often referred to as “field attitude”. Field attitude is something that cannot be taught in a classroom but must be developed through experience in actual field conditions. This project gives students the hands-on experience they need to begin their professional career. It affords them the opportunity to take everything that has been learned in the classroom and apply it in the field.

Why Give:

We are seeking your help to raise funds to help cover the cost for program supplies, food, lodging and transportation associated with the six-week Field Camp. A number of students participating in the Field School do not have the financial means to pay and will not be able to attend if we are unable to cover the cost. Our goal of $12,000 will provide assistance for students participating in the project who have shown the need for financial aid, as well as, reduce the financial burden of all students participating. Any additional funds raised will go towards continuing to fund those students in need of financial assistance.
