Thinking Nobel - Study Abroad in Sweden

Who We Are

We are a group of graduate students and undergraduates at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.  We are working on our PhDs, Master’s Degrees, and Bachelor’s degrees in Neuroscience, Music, Math, Psychology, and more – across the 21 of us, we represent eight different graduate programs and undergraduate majors. We are a highly motivated group and extremely excited about the opportunity to head abroad.

Where We Are Going

We have all been accepted into a study abroad program called “Thinking Nobel,” centered at the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The Karolinska Institute is the esteemed presenter of the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology every year, and we have the profound honor of meeting with professors on the Nobel selection committee to learn about the process by which the Prize is awarded. Even more exciting, we will engage in scientific exchange with other professors, graduate students, and researchers in several labs at the Karolinska Institute, talking about their research, sharing our work, and brainstorming about the future of neuroscience and music.

What We Will Be Doing

We have a rigorous eight-day trip planned. We will meet PhD students at the Karolinska Institute, participate in certain journal clubs, meet with world-renowned researchers, take tours of labs, and present our own research in efforts to collaborate. We will also take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the culture of Sweden by hitting some outstanding historical hot-spots in and around the beautiful city of Stockholm.

Why We Need Your Help

Considering the caliber of this international trip, one can imagine that it doesn't come cheap. And as students, we don't have the necessary means to cover all of our expenses. Yet we know this could truly be a life-changing experience for some of us – we have the opportunity to form new and future collaborations with other like-minded individuals, see how research is done in another country, and bring back new insights about how others live in the world around us.

We will be posting here as we prepare, travel, and debrief on return.

With your gift to Thinking Nobel, the Georgia State University Foundation will offset costs of student travel and group expenses for the Thinking Nobel: Karolinska Institute Neuroscience & Music Lab study abroad program. Any additional funds will continue to offset the costs of travel. If the project funds remain inactive for six (6) months, they will be transferred to the Neuroscience Institute's operating fund.
