Our Project:
Each year Georgia State University’s Department of Physical Therapy students travel to Moultrie, GA to work for the Farmworker Family Health Program. This year, twelve second-year graduate students will be making the trip to South Georgia for one week in May where they will conduct screening with children of immigrant workers during the daytime and treating the migrant workers when they finish their work each evening. This opportunity allows students to apply principles of their first two years of course work to real world experiences, while helping the underserved migrant worker population.
Why Give:
Farm workers tend to sustain many injuries on the job from harvesting produce and lifting heavy loads repeatedly. Many of the health issues and pain they experience stem from a lack of basic needs that we take for granted, like pillows, socks, and t-shirts. Many workers require ice packs, ACE bandages, back and knee braces and other basic medical supplies to aid in their recovery and prevent re-injury. We estimate that we will need about $2,500 to purchase all necessary supplies for this year’s trip. Your support will not only go to help provide these supplies for the workers and their families, but also to enhance the educational experience for the Georgia State Physical Therapy students.
About Us:
Georgia State University is the home of the oldest accredited Physical Therapy program in the state of Georgia. Students gain a Doctor of Physical Therapy(DPT) degree after three intensive years of graduate study. Georgia State Physical Therapy Students have traveled to Moultrie to participate in the Family Farmworker Health Program for the past 14 years. This is a multi-disciplinary program including students from Emory, UGA, and several other colleges. It is a great opportunity for GSU DPT students to work with an underserved population, apply the skills learned in the classroom, and interact with various other healthcare disciplines toward a common goal.
