Nica Round Two: We Need Help From YOU!

Our Project

The Georgia State University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program is sending a group of fourteen passionate students on a week long study abroad trip to Nicaragua. Students will visit a local and regional health clinic to gain a better understanding of the level of care provided. Most of the week will be spent in the small rural village of Los Robles helping the underserved women, children, older adults and individuals with disabilities. In addition, students will set up a physical therapy clinic to address the musculoskeletal needs of the local coffee farmers. Students will also be working with the local healthcare providers to educate them on basic health tips as well as increasing their awareness on sustainable healthcare and ways in which that can be achieved. The team will also be involved in community outreach projects to include building clay ovens and painting homes with mosquito repellent. Students are eager to immerse themselves in the Nicaraguan culture while serving both the general community and individual healthcare needs to a population so deserving of the services we are able to provide.

The Impact/Why Give

This study abroad trip will cost approximately $1400 per student, which includes program fees, food, lodging, transportation, and airfare. Our goal of $12,000 is to offset these costs as a means to decrease the financial burden on each student participating. Any donations that exceed our goal will continue to help offset the total cost per student. Every step you can take to support us will be greatly appreciated, as we are committed to bettering the lives of those in Los Robles.

Who We Are

Georgia State University is home to the oldest accredited Physical Therapy program in the state of Georgia. Students spend three years in didactic work and clinical internships in addition to being on a research team and graduate with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). The class of 2017 is excited for the opportunity to continue the tradition of taking their knowledge base and practical skills to Nicaragua to serve the people of Los Robles while learning more about themselves through cultural immersion.
